  • @Bisonium: As @Bibliothekarin said, we're probably not able to help you in any way, because there is a different system here in Germany. However, as the problem appears here, too, it is unlikely that it's typical to Swedish Tolinos. That, at least, should give you some leverage with German Telekom (telekom.de). Refer them to this thread and forum, if necessary :)

What irks me is the fact that you can use the same ebooks on other devices but not on your Tolino. That seems to imply that the books themselves are ok and that the delivery systems are working correctly, too.

Sorry to leave you hanging :(

Yes, if i go directly over the explorer of the Tolino then the books work out just fine. But i do not really like the Tolinoexplorer and prefer to download them via ADE. Besides on ADE i have a better overview about the books i already read. And i just want to know why there are only some books which have this problem and not every book!

The problem with my tolino occurs with a lot of ebooks since the start of may, just like with the tolino users in sweden. But I have had this problem before in january when i tried to download a few of the older books in the onleihe. Just like now it was not with every book, only with a few ones. Then it worked without any problems with the newer books until the start of may. One example for a defect book would be These broken stars. Lilac und Tarver. On the tolino i have the same error as the swedish tolino users, on my cybook odysse everything works out just fine.

I wrote to the onleihe support and described the problem but they had no solution for me. In their last mail they just suggested to reset the tolino but that did not help.
I tried to load the books via usb on the Tolino of my father to test if it is only a problem with my Tolino. But there they did not work either. So it seems to be a general Tolino problem. I wonder why there are not more people with this problem.

The next step will be to write to the Tolino support. Then there will be at least one german user with the same problem and they will not be able to say it is only in sweden ;)

  • @Rebecca and @Bisonium: Please try one of the sample books you can get from Adobe. That should narrow the problem down, because they do everything ADE expects. Also try one of the free books from Gutenberg.org and transfer those via ADE, because these eliminate the DRM and only test the connection/transfer itself.

Can you two please compare notes on which books are problematic? Try to find at least one that works and one that doesn't work for both of you.

The idea is to nail the problem as accurately as possible.

  • okay, thank you for the tipps. I will try to test them out this evening or this weekend.
My personal theory is, as Bibliothekarin expects, that there is a problem between ADE and Tolino. I think that there is some problem in the way ADE coverts the books from azw to epub - maybe with the formatting. If the Tolino-ebookintepreter is very sensitive about the way of formatting than it would be logical that it can not read some of the ADE-converted books. In this theory would fit that there is no problem with the books if you download them directly from the Tolinoexplorer. Of course Tolino formats them in a way, that works for Tolino. It also fits, that the books work on the cybook odysse - it has an old ebookintepreter which is not that sensitive. And it fits that the books work on the Tolino if you strip the formatting away and only load them on the Tolino as a textfile.
I am aware that it is not allowed to do so because on this way the drm is removed. I really only tried it for two books because i wanted to see whether the problem is with the formatting. Normally of course i do not remove the drm!

I downloaded some example ebooks from ade:

    Books from Adobe"http://www.adobe.com/de/soluti…sample-ebook-library.html
    The books were:

    Alice adventures in Wonderland
    The geography of bliss
    The adventures of Sherlock Holmes
    Thirteen moons

Alice and The geography of bliss worked fine in ADE. They were downloaded as epub from the website.

With Sherlock and Thirteen moons I had a problem: ADE was not able to open the downloaded books. The error was: Error. Check activation. The books were downloaded as ascm.
I loaded Alice and The geography of bliss on my reader with ADE but I got the usual message: Die gewuenschte Aktion konnte leider nicht ausgefuehrt werden, da der Titel defekt ist. Bitte wenden sie sich an ihren Buchhaendler.

Then I imported the downloaded books directly from the download folder into caliber and loaded them again on the Tolino. This time my Tolino was able to open "The geography of bliss" without problems. "Alice adventures in Wonderland" did not work. There was still the same error message.

Then I downloaded some books from Gutenberg.org

    Books from http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/DE_Sachbuch_(B%C3%BCcherregal)
    I tried:
Geologische Beobachtungen ueber die Vulcanischen Inseln by Charles Darwin
Untersuchungen ueber die Radioaktiven Substanzen (Marie Curie)

But when I loaded them on my Tolino with ADE there was the same error as before with this books too! Tolino was not able to open them.

Afterwards I imported both books directly from my download folder into caliber and loaded them again on my Tolino. My Tolino was able to open "Untersuchungen ueber die Radioaktiven Substanzen" but with "Geologische Beobachtungen"there was still the same error message as before.

Then I went on gutenberg.org with the web-explorer of the Tolino and downloaded "Geologische Beobachtungen" again. This time it worked without problems!

    Strange...

So it can not only be a problem with ADE. It seems as if Tolino has problems with ebooks as soon as they went through a programm on the computer (like ADE or Calibre).

Here are some book examples from the onleihe if someone wants to try them out on her/his Tolino.

Books from the Onleihe which do work:
Sonea 2: Die Heilerin (Trudi Canavan)
Wotan 1: Im Bann des Fluchtraegers (Nina Blazon)
    Blindes Misstrauen (Swantje Opperman)

Books from the Onleihe which do not work:
Schattendiebin 1: Die verborgene Gabe (Catherine Egan)
These broken stars. Lilac und Tarver (Meagan Spooner)
    The evil me (Stephanie Hasse)

I hope I have the time this weekend to update the onleihe about the results and to write to the Tolino support.

  • @Bisonium: Would you please try the same books as @Rebecca?

It is pretty strange that you had problems with a DRM-free ebook from gutenberg.org.

You have two different errors, though. One is Check-Activation and the other is Book-Defect. Which one occured when you tried the DRM-free books?

Additionally: Can you determine, which version of ePub the books were?

(Can someone please test books with a different Tolino?)

(Can someone please test books with a different Tolino?)

Würde ich gern testen, geht aber nicht:

Books from the Onleihe which do not work:
Schattendiebin 1: Die verborgene Gabe (Catherine Egan) - in meiner Bibl nicht verfügbar, da ausgeliehen
These broken stars.
The evil me (Stephanie Hasse) - gibt es in meiner Bibl nicht

  • @ Annanymous "You have two different errors, though. One is Check-Activation and the other is Book-Defect. Which one occured when you tried the DRM-free books?"
@Annanymous "Additionally: Can you determine, which version of ePub the books were?"

  • I have only problems with books that incorporates DRM protection. And in Sweden every library use the same ePub format, i.e. with the DRM protection active. That´s why I cannot load any books from Swedish libraries - not directly via WiFi and not via ADE/USB. they all show the same error. I have understood that the DRM protection is not standard procedure in other countries, thus not as big a problem as in Sweden.

I Am pretty sure it is a problem that Tolino has when trying to load books that are DRM-active, after one date in beginning of May. It's a petty the firmware 10.0.1 for tolino came about the same time, so it wa at first expected to cause the problem and forcing us to try the wiping/restoring procedure to earlier frmware instead of just nailing the problem to Tolinos way of not handling newer DRM-sstuff. And it is petty it is "impossible" to contact Adobe and get answers (or even to report this bug or issue) about their changed (?) DRM-routines that most possibly cause problems when one tries to load such book. I'd like Tolino (Telecom/Kobo) to realize there must be a problem, but they don't see it as enough big a problem just yet. Hope that will change though ..... Thanks everyone for doing all this testing and trying to hlep out, it really gives me some hope to get my expensive eReader to work as expected again soon (?).

  • The acsm-files are just a container with orders that are read by a specialised software (ADE, firmware of the reader, apps etc). With the orders within the acsm-file the software is able to get the actual ePub from the server. So an acsm-file is to an ePub like a phone call to the pizza service is to having your pizza :)

Both of you: If you load ebooks from gutenberg.org into ADE and use ADE to transfer them to your reader, does that work? If you download them directly with the Tolino's browser, what happens? Books from gutenberg.org are without DRM. So there is no acsm-file involved. If you get problems when churning them through ADE but not when downloading them directly with the Tolino, we know that ADE is the culprit.

Further: If you try "The adventures of Sherlock Holmes" and "Tony Hillerman E-Reader", you get acsm-files. The first is without DRM, the latter has a time-lock. Please try both of these with ADE and directly with the Tolino and tell us what happens.

Let us know which versions of ADE and Tolino's firmware you have, so that others with the same constellation can test these, too.

@spitzefeder: Please try the books mentioned below, too. Perhaps going back to your firmware version on the Tolino and avoiding ADE is a workaround allready :)

If we can't find a solution, we might at least be able to bang Adobe and Rakuten (Tolino's producer) on their heads with a proper error report.

Here are links to the books:
Gutenberg, Coral Reefs (no DRM, ePub without images)
    Adobe, Sherlock Holmes
    Adobe, Tony Hillerman

  • Great, thanks for summarizing the list of books to test! I'm gonna test these books. I'm a bit busy today, though it's holiday weekend in Swedwn, but good idea to create a bug report together and send to Tolino producer!

  • Great, thanks for your help with analysis again, Annanymous!
I have ADE 4.5 and Tolino 10.0.1. But the problem already occured with the last two Tolino versions too. Since the first of may I have the problem with many books. Before i had it once in the last week of december with some old ebooks from the onleihe (they were from 2011 i think)

    Here are my results:

    Gutenberg-books:
Gutenberg --> ADE --> Tolino --> does not work (Titel defect)
Gutenberg --> Calibre --> Tolino --> some work, some do not (Titel defect)
Gutenberg --> Tolinowebexplorer --> Tolino --> all books work fine

    ADE-books:
ADE-website (Sherlock) --> ADE --> ERROR. Check activation! (ADE was not able to load the book)
ADE-website (Tony Hillerman) --> ADE --> Error. Check activation! (ADE was not able to load the book)

    ADE-website (Sherlock)--> Tolinobrowser --> Tolino --> Book works fine
ADE-website (Tony Hillerman) --> Tolinobrowser --> Tolino --> Book works fine

  • I usually dont use ADE, becaus I think it is much easier to just copy/download the acsm-file to the download directory on my Tolino (either with wifi and or with usb-cable) and just let Tolino download the book itself. So, I tried that procedure with all three books and all worked fine without any problem. Then I gave it a try to transfer the book from ADE -> Tolino and I managed to transfer the Sherlock Holmes and the Coral Reef books. But with the Adobe-book, ADE hang and I had to dissconnect Tolino ect to start it all up again. But I suspect that problem does not have to to with the originally issued "defect title"-error, but might aswell be from the fact that I use a bad install of ADE 3.0 on my computer (I have tried may different versions (2/3/4), just to see if any version, maybe, solved my problem, and the last installation might have gotten messed up.in some way. Btw all ADE version worked for reading any ePub inside ADE (on the computer), even the local library ePubs. But none of the version worked to get the local library book open on my Tolino).

  • Alle drei Büche

    r funktionieren bei mir

    einwandfrei

    .

    Vorgehensweise:
    http://www.adobe.com/de/soluti…sample-ebook-library.html

  • Good! So, what does this tell us, do we have anything to tell Adobe / Tolino? I mean, Adobesr own books work, don't you think Tolino/Adobe will just blame someone else again?

  • @Rebecca: I think we nailed your problem down to ADE. Please try to use the Tolino's browser with your library. A clean deinstallation of ADE and installing it fresh (maybe an older and less nosy version) might help, too. To remove ADE completely from your machine, you'll have to de-authorise it (and backup all bought books!) before you uninstall. Additionally you'll have to manually delete all folders in ~/My Digital Editions and edit the registry (remove HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Adept).

If you decide to reinstall ADE, please try the books again and see if it works.

@Bisonium: You could also try a fresh install of ADE and then try the books again. ADE is a pig when it comes to cleaning up after itself and having different versions at the same time can mess things up a lot.

Does your library happen to offer English books? If so, it would be interesting to see whether it's a language related problem.

  • Alle drei Bücher funktionieren bei mir einwandfrei.

    Großartig :)

Good! So, what does this tell us, do we have anything to tell Adobe / Tolino? I mean, Adobesr own books work, don't you think Tolino/Adobe will just blame someone else again?

Right now we're not at a point where we can clearly point at one or the other. We have some useful hints and by now it would be helpful if both Adobe and Rakuten decided to jump on board with testing. But I'm afraid we'll have to do it on our own.

Let's first see whether a fresh install of ADE helps. If it doesn't, you and @Rebecca should try Tolino's firmware 1.9.4, because that works for @spitzefeder while eliminating ADE.

  • I got the 1.7.8 fw installed duringe wipeing- /factory reset option on Tolino. That version worked for med from Dec 2016 -> May 2017. Now it does not work anymore, nor does the 10.0.1 fw. (that's why I dont think it is a firmware thing, rather some Adobe routine change, that the Tolino is not ready for).

I coud off course try to also install the 1.9.4 firmware, but where do I find that version?
